What is Geo Promotion?

The Geo Promotion foundation is established in 1986 by students from the Faculty of Spatial Sciences (FSS) at the University of Groningen. During its existence, this foundation has organized conferences and symposia about relevant themes in the field of planning, geography and real estate. This has been done with the aim of promoting the integration between business, government, and students.

The board

The foundation is being managed by six board members. These board members are students of the FSS and they change every year. During their board year, they are responsible for all the duties of the foundation, such as: keeping contact with the Faculty, promotion of the foundation and most importantly; organizing the conference.


The board exists of a chairman, secretary, treasurer, vice-chairman, commissioner internal relations and commissioner external relations. Each function has a number of specific tasks, but there is also a large number of tasks that are not attributed to a specific function but are divided during the year by the board members.

Function Explanation
Chairman As chairman, you are responsible for managing the board. This includes maintaining the group composition and dynamics, making sure the tasks are distributed equally and conducting the meetings. In short: keep the overview during the year. Next, you are the main contact person for faculty and other external affairs excluding companies, keynotes, and participants. The most visible task is opening and closing the conference itself, which does require comfort and skill in speaking/presenting.

Secretary As a secretary, you are responsible for the written communication and you are supporting your fellow board members where needed. It is important that you work accurately and keep a good overview. Like all board members, you are busy with organizing the conference, tasks you can think of are planning, promotion, search for speakers and the schedule for the day.

Treasurer The treasurer keeps an eye on the pennies. You keep an overview of the budget and estimate the costs and revenues. After the event, you invoice the companies and visitors.

Vice-chairman The vice-chairman often has a supporting role within the board. You are a handyman and often go with meetings and help with larger tasks (like acquisition) or tasks that fall ‘in between’, like the day program, the location, keynote speakers etc.

Internal Relations The internal is responsible for the design and promotion of the event. You design the posters, banners and the program booklet. Furthermore, you are responsible for keeping the website up to date. Experience in these things is not essential, you will learn as you do it, this makes this function very educational!

External Relations As the external of the board, you maintain the relationship with the companies and external organizations. Within the board, you organize an acquisition team to coordinate the acquisition. This function is the heaviest halfway the organization after you and the board agreed on a theme for the conference. It is a great opportunity to have an insight into the work field and improve your network!

  • Between 5 and 20 hours a week. (The organization will cost more time in the final month before the conference)

Motivational letter

In a motivational letter, you explain why you want to apply and why we should choose you. The letter consists of the following points at a minimum:

  • The reason for your application
  • The board position you want to apply for

The letter can be written in Dutch or English.


When we receive your application we will send a confirmation. We will contact you again after the 31st of March, to give you further information and to make an appointment for the interview.
