Workshop description:
Sustainable accessibility of Ameland
The accessibility and vitality of the Wadden-island Ameland has been under pressure for some time. Partly as a result of human intervention, such as land reclamation up to the mid- 20th century and the closure of the Zuiderzee (1932) and Lauwerszee (1969), the ‘natural way’ of the Wadden Sea has changed permanently. The channels have become narrower and shallower. The autonomous morphological development necessitates more and more intensive dredging to keep the fairway between Nes and Holwert at the agreed depth and width (the so-called fairway maintenance dimensions). The fairway also started to meander and has become more difficult to navigate. The expectation is that the silting up of the fairway will continue in the future until at least 2050. As a result, the reliability of the ferry connection, and consequently the quality of life (vitality), is under pressure. In recent years, the ferry has regularly suffered from delays and cancellations of sailings. In addition, dredging activities lead to negative effects on the ecosystem of the Wadden Sea (Natura 2000 and UNESCO World Heritage) and to relatively high maintenance costs. Based on the above, it is necessary to find a solution to guarantee the accessibility of Ameland in the future. During the workshop, we inform you about the challenges in developing a reliable and sustainable solution for the accessibility of Ameland and we invite you to share your ideas and collaborate with us in enhancing this solution!
